NYC provides subsidies to all eligible low-income families through the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, so they can rent and afford housing in the private market. However, NYCHA section 8 HCV eligibility requirements are based on income, family size, immigration status, and criminal history.

NYCHA is the largest Section 8 program operator in the country, with 85,000 existing vouchers available. Applications for the Section 8 waiting list were opened for one week in June and closed for the first time since December 2009.

The agency reports a total of 638,224 applications were received, 301,044 of which were received within the first 24 hours.

Once families are selected for the Section 8 waiting list, they must be approved before receiving a Housing Choice Voucher. Individuals may be asked to update their applications or attend follow-up interviews. So they should keep in touch to avoid risking being removed from the list.

Housing Choice Vouchers determine how many units a family can search for, and how long it will take them to find a place. A family will pay 30% to 40% of their adjusted monthly income for rent, and NYCHA will pay the rest.

Individuals who have a Housing Choice voucher section 8 can look for a unit in all five boroughs using NYCHA’s online portal or Affordable Housing.com.

If you filled out an application form for NYCHA’s Section 8 waitlist lottery during June 2024. you will receive notification of your waitlist status through email and U.S. mail.

Create an account, or log in to your account if you already have one. then you can check your application status. After that you view whether your application is approved or not.

How to Apply for NYCHA Section 8 Application

Individuals can complete the application from the NYCHA Section 8 website. you must give 20 minutes to complete and must be finished in a single session.

You must check your eligibility criteria before filling out the application. Make sure not to submit more than one application, otherwise, it will be rejected or duplicated.

Who is eligible for Section 8 Housing at NYCHA?

Keep the following things in mind to be eligible for Section 8 housing.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or an emancipated minor to be eligible.
  • At least one person in the applicant household must be a United States citizen, or the household must have eligible immigration status.
  • Applicants must be limited to a certain amount of income annually to be eligible for Section 8. For example, for one person, the income limit is $54,350, while for a family of four, the limit is $77,650.
  • You must meet NYCHA’s definition of family as one or two people or people related by blood, marriage, domestic partnership, adoption, guardianship, or court-granted custody.
